NGO Overview, Mission, and Purpose: What We Are About and Who We Help

Doctors Without Borders, or Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF) was founded in France in 1971 by doctors and journalists in order to provide “independent, impartial assistance” to more than 60 countries where survival is “threatened by violence, neglect, or catastrophe” (Doctors Without Borders). In 1999 Doctors Without Borders won a Nobel Peace Prize.

MSF does not only work towards bring healthcare assistance to those in need, but also reserves the right to bring attention to the neglect, inadequacies, and abuse of the aid system. We are advocates for the improvement of medical treatments and protocols. MSF also raises awareness about violence, atrocities, and neglect that does not always make it on the top headlines.

Unlike other organizations MSF is “is based on the humanitarian principles of medical ethics and impartiality” and therefore does not administer service or refuse service to anyone because of race, religion, or politics. Doctors Without Borders is proud to be independent. We do not affiliate with any religion or political party. 90% of our funding comes from other non- governmental organizations.

NGO "Bottom Line": How Me Make an Impactdwb-a-2013.jpg

We make a difference.
Every year, (MSF) provides emergency medical care to millions of people around the world who are caught in crises that range from armed conflict, epidemics to malnutrition, or natural disasters. MSF makes a difference by assisting people who face discrimination or are neglected by their local health system.
It takes more than just one person to make an impact, that’s why on any given day, MSF can expect more than “22,000 doctors, nurses, logisticians, water-and-sanitation experts, administrators, and other qualified professionals … [to be] providing medical care around the world” (Doctors Without Borders). These medical professionals and MSF take inventory of the aid already being provided in order to fill the gaps in care.
Providing quality care is one of our top priorities. All money donated to Doctors Without Borders makes a difference, it saves lives. In addition to the care MSF provides, it is essential to remind the people we care for that they are not alone.

Why You Should Join Us...

Every year, millions of people die due to preventable and/or treatable diseases. The world continues to neglect its suffering population. Billions of people live with little to no access to healthcare under dangerous, impoverished conditions.

Doctors Without Borders works day and night to resolve all these issues as best it can. Not only do we provide the world's most impoverished, and most disadvantaged, with healthcare and doctors, as our name would suggest, but we also work towards bringing light to humanitarian nightmares. Based on medical ethics and impartiality, we don't focus on any discriminator and provide the highest quality of healthcare to people in crisis regardless of race, religion, or political affiliation.

In the end, Doctors Without Borders provides care in a myriad of ways. We prevent unnecessary deaths by treating harmful diseases. We remind those who are in the worst of situations that we still care, that there are still people out there who will care for them. We turn our focus towards those who are forgotten in the world and work towards improving their health and overall well-being.
